As dentists, patients are at the heart of our practice. At Temple University’s Kornberg School of Dentistry, we are provided with a strong education and rich clinical experience. The city of Philadelphia has provided our student dentists with a large patient population from which we are able to learn and master the skills of dentistry. As such, we feel great joy in being able to give back to the community that has given us so much.

For most dental students, being able to help people within the health professions field and develop relationships with patients were most likely two very important factors in choosing to pursue a career in dentistry. The journey through dental school is long but our outreach committee is dedicated to providing students with opportunities to start giving back now. Many of our outreach events allow students to educate members of the community about the importance of oral health and proper oral hygiene. Other outreach events serve as a way for dental students to reach out within our local community, interact with other students, and take a break from the rigors of school.

Starting March 30th 2018 dental students came together to assemble dental goodie bags with tooth brushes, toothpaste, floss, and poly grip. Also included in the bags were tips on oral hygiene. Up to 200 bags were donated to a veteran home and a homeless shelter.

MOM-n-PA

Held in a different location in Pennsylvania each year, MOM-n-PA is a 2-day dental clinic hosted by the Missions of Mercy for the underserved population of Pennsylvania. All work is provided on a first-come, first-serve basis. Thanks to the hard work and generosity of sponsors, dentists, dental assistants, hygienists, students, EFDAs, and lay members of the community, each MOM-n-PA clinic is able to serve up to 1,000 patients per day.

Not only does the event provide a great way for students to be charitable while learning and applying the skills taught in school, but it also offers the opportunity to connect with current dentists and future colleagues from other dental schools. For many students, the most rewarding part of this experience is the interactions they have with the patients – the gratitude received at the end of a treatment reminds us why we chose dentistry in the first place.

Cradles to Crayon

Temple ASDA outreach team organized a group of students to volunteer for Cradles to Crayons on October 9th. We sorted and inspected donated items and packaged them for delivery to children who needs them. Our volenteers had a great time bouyed by the knowegele that thier efforts helped to supporting 70,000 children in the Greater Phildelphia reigon annually.

Winter Food & Clothing Drive

Our winter collection drive will be accepting non-perishable foods and seasonal attire & accessories. All donations will be given to St. Francis Inn, a foundation devoted to helping the poor and homeless, not only by feeding them and providing shelter, but also by helping them build relationships and empowering themselves. St. Francis Inn is unique in the fact that the individuals are served restaurant style by volunteers.

Collection boxes can be found in each cluster conference room and by the instructor table in pre-clinic. The team with the most points, greater than 50, will win an ASDA sponsored pizza party at the end of the semester!
